Top Story: Despite A Large Number Of Detractors, Animation Guild Members Ratify New Contract

New details have emerged about an animated series based on the cartoon band Gorillaz.

Ten episodes of the Gorillaz series will be produced for release in 2018, according to co-creator Jamie Hewlett, who spoke about the project in an interview yesterday.

“I’ll direct the first and the last one,” he told Exclaim, “but we’ll have to get someone in to direct the other episodes. I think even attempting to do it all by myself will kill me.”

Notably, the Gorillaz crew will all be 2D. Said Hewlett:

I think it’s a beautiful style of animation. Everybody does cg now, and it is great when you’re making backgrounds, like environments and landscapes, but not the actual characters. I’m still very much inspired by the work of Chuck Jones, and I love that animation. It’s art. I’d like to keep the characters in that style for the rest of this campaign. So the characters on the show will be 2D, but everything else is up for grabs.

Hewlett does not rule out the use of live-action footage and other mixed-media elements, like collage and cg, within the series format. The series could also feature appearances by artists who appear on Gorillaz’ new Humanz album, as well as other guest stars.

The most recent Gorillaz video, “Saturnz Barz (Spirit House),” was released last month to promote the release of Humanz:
