Top Story: ‘The Wild Robot’ And ‘Arcane’ Lead 52nd Annie Award Nominations

Comcast-NBCUniversal/Illumination’s franchise The Secret Life of Pets is headed to Universal Studios Hollywood in the form of a new ride to open in 2020.

“The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash!” is described as an immersive experience inspired by adoption day, a date where shelters open their doors for potential owners to meet animals seeking a home. Guests will assume the roles of stray puppies alongside characters from the film (Max, Snowball, Gidget, Chloe, and Duke) embarking on an adventure to find forever homes.

The new ride will be located adjacent to the park’s two existing attractions based on Illumination’s Despicable Me franchise: “Despicable Me Minion Mayhem” and “Super Silly Fun Land.”

According to Universal Studios Hollywood, the experience will combine live, dimensional, and animated characters with “hyper-realistic media” while guests ride on vehicles along a track throughout New York City streets towards the Pet Adoption event.

Universal’s upcoming ride suggests confidence in the continued expansion of the Secret Life of Pets property, which will also launch a theatrical sequel on June 7, 2019. The original Secret Life of Pets, released in 2016, was Illumination’s most successful film outside of its Despicable Me franchise, grossing $368.3 million domestically and $507.1 million abroad for a global total of $875.4 million.

A new trailer for The Secret Life of Pets 2 was also released this morning:
