‘The Prince of Egypt’ Stage Musical Sets London Run In 2020
Co-directed by Brenda Chapman, Steve Hickner, and Simon Wells, Dreamworks Animation’s first hand-drawn feature, The Prince of Egypt, celebrated its 20th anniversary last year and is now poised to debut as a stage musical in London in early 2020.
Featuring a score by Stephen Schwartz, the new adaptation of the 1998 film is scheduled to start previews at the Dominion Theatre in the city’s West End district on February 5, 2020 with an official opening on February 25. It is scheduled to run for 32 weeks.
The Oscar-winning song “When You Believe” will be part of the musical along with the other four songs that appeared in the film. Additionally, Schwartz has written ten new numbers for the stage version. Philip LaZebnik, who penned the original screenplay, wrote the musical’s book.
Stephen Schwartz’s son, Scott Schwartz, will serve as director. He previously helmed the show when it had its world premiere at the Theatreworks Silicon Valley in 2017. The musical also had a run at the Fredericia Teater in Denmark last year. Choreographer Sean Cheesman will return for the London run.
The cast for the new London production will be announced at a later date. When the project was being developed in 2016, its casting was criticized for not being diverse enough, but those issues have since been addressed.
The musical is produced by DreamWorks Theatricals, Michael McCabe, and Neil Laidlaw.
