Skybound Entertainment, the company behind The Walking Dead and the animated series Invincible, has launched Skybound Japan, a new division established to grow the company’s global footprint.

Skybound has been ramping up its plans in Japan for the past year. The company first invested in Remow, an international anime distribution company founded by Japanese publisher Shueisha, and in September, Skybound struck a deal with Fuji TV to produce a series adaptation of Heart Attack. The project is based on a Skybound original graphic novel series by Shawn Kittelsen and illustrator Eric Zawadzki.

A description of the book-turned-series reads:

The electrifying sci-fi television series explores a post-pandemic world where gene therapy has saved the human race from disease—only to give birth to Variants: people with powers so unique the government denies their human rights.

Rick Jacobs, managing partner of linear content at Skybound, said in a release:

We are incredibly excited to launch Skybound Japan and partner with some of the greatest creators in the world. As lifelong fans of Japanese content, the opportunity to help bring these stories to life in live-action and anime is a dream come true. The adaptation of Heart Attack is just the beginning of what we hope to achieve in the Japanese market.

Skybound Japan will be headed by Ash Nukui, a producer on The Sniffer and Memoir of a Teenage Amnesiac who formerly worked at Bandai Namco Group.
