Guru Studio And Sesame Workshop Team Up For ‘Sesame Street’ Mecha Spin-Off

The Sesame Street cast are back — as robots. Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization behind the long-running series, will produce Mecha Builders (working title) with Toronto’s Guru Studio.

Here are the details:

• Mecha Builders will feature well-known Sesame Street characters “as heroes in a robot-animation style,” according to the producers. It will air in the U.S. on HBO Max, the Warnermedia streaming service due to launch on May 27. Production begins this month.
• Guru Studio has produced numerous high-profile animated series in the kids’ sphere. Its catalogue includes Justin Time, which was nominated for an Emmy and an Annie; the Netflix Original series True and the Rainbow Kingdom; PAW Patrol, which aired on Nick Jr. in the U.S.; and Ever After High for Mattel.
• The studio also worked on the visual development and production of Cartoon Saloon’s feature The Breadwinner.
• Frank Falcone, president and executive creative director at Guru Studio, said in a statement: “We’re thrilled to be working on such timeless and beloved classic characters with the amazing team at Sesame Workshop.”
• Kay Wilson Stallings, head of development and production at Sesame Workshop, added: “With Guru Studio’s masterful animated storytelling, we’re going beyond the Sesame Street neighborhood with a new take on our iconic brand.”
• In October, HBO Max struck a five-year deal to stream new and old episodes of Sesame Street, as well as new spin-off series and specials. It was first announced then that a show called Mecha Builders would come to the streamer. This article in Variety has more.
