China’s ‘Green Snake’ Debuts At #3 On Netflix’s Weekly Charts
Green Snake (a.k.a. White Snake 2), which topped the Chinese box office earlier this year, launched in the #3 spot on Netflix’s non-English film chart with 10.65 million hours viewed since its December 1 debut on the platform.
The film managed this feat without making much of an impact in the United States, where it did not place in the top 10 non-English films. However, it did make the top 10 in 30 countries, predominantly in Asia and Central/South America.
No other animated features made Netflix’s top 10 list for the week in either the English or non-English categories.
The film is Light Chaser Animation’s sequel to its 2019 hit White Snake. The sequel is directed by Amp Wong, one of the co-directors of White Snake, and produced once again at Beijing’s Light Chaser Animation Studios. While the original was set up as a co-production with Warner Bros. Far East, the new film is a fully Chinese production.
Animation on Netflix had more success last week on the series side. Arcane took the no. 5 spot for English series with 18.18 million hours viewed. It marks the show’s fourth week in the top 10. The other English series that made the list was the season four launch of Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous in the no. 7 spot with 16.9M hours.
An animated series also made Netflix’ non-English list: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean at no. 8 with 13.98M hours.
Netflix started reporting verified viewership data for the first time in November and publishes updated lists every Tuesday.
