Animated Films And Series Coming To Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max In January 2021

Welcome to our first-ever monthly guide to streaming animation.

We’ve rounded up the shows and films — new and old alike — coming to Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max in January (in the U.S.). Fully animated and hybrid titles are included, as are documentaries about subjects related to animation. We’ll be publishing a new round-up every month.

Our picks

Carmen Sandiego. Netflix’s well-liked take on the long-running edutainment franchise returns for a fourth and final season, which will continue to flesh out the benevolent super-thief’s back story. (Jan 15)

Isle of Dogs. Wes Anderson’s Oscar-nominated feature is a love letter to pooches, an homage to Akira Kurosawa and yakuza films, and an immaculately crafted stop-motion marvel wrapped into one. Three years after its release, it is joining Disney+. (Jan 15)

Studio Ghibli documentaries. Over the last decade or so, the hermetic Japanese studio has greenlit a string of behind-the-scenes documentaries, two of which — The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness and Never-Ending Man: Hayao Miyazaki — are on HBO Max. (Jan 12)

Vintage Cartoon Network. HBO Max is also welcoming a torrent of old shows from its sister network. Subscribers can now revisit Codename: Kids Next Door; Courage the Cowardly Dog; Ed, Edd n Eddy; and The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy. (Already streaming)

Pixar Popcorn. Buried in the deluge of announcements at Disney’s recent Investor Day, this series of mini-shorts is one of the first newly unveiled shows to launch. We know little about it, other than that it features established Pixar characters in new storylines. (Disney+, Jan 22)
