Animated Films And Series Coming To Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max In March 2021
Welcome to our third monthly guide to streaming animation.
We’ve rounded up the shows and films — new and old alike — coming to Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max in March (in the U.S.). Fully animated and hybrid titles are included, as are documentaries about subjects related to animation. We’ll be publishing a new round-up every month.
Check out our five picks of the month, then scroll on down for the full list.
Our picks
Raya and the Last Dragon. The latest from Walt Disney Animation Studios (Frozen, Moana) is another made-for-theaters movie that Covid has pushed into a simultaneous streaming release. Enjoy those while they last. Kelly Marie Tran voices the titular character, a warrior adventuring across a magical, mythical Southeast Asian-inspired land. (Mar 5, Disney+ with additional fee)
12 oz. Mouse. The stream of content being fed to HBO Max from the Cartoon Network/Adult Swim vaults includes this, Matt Maiellaro’s deliciously oddball comedy-thriller about a very boozy mouse. The show, which aired in 2005–06 before coming back last year for a third and final season, is Adult Swim at its crudest and funniest. (Mar 6, HBO Max)
Bombay Rose. Delayed from its Netflix launch last December, Gitanjali Rao’s painterly tribute to India’s greatest city is finally premiering on International Women’s Day. In our review, Carlos Aguilar wrote, “Rao’s feature, with its multiple subplots, lacks focus. Still, the overall experience brims with authenticity — it was animated in India.” (Mar 8, Netflix)
City of Ghosts. A gang of ghost-loving kids go looking for paranormal activity in L.A. and end up learning about the local neighborhoods in Elizabeth Ito’s documentary-like series. Ito is an alumna of Adventure Time, having written and directed on the show, and City of Ghosts is a product of Netflix’s young in-house animation studio. (Mar 5, Netflix)
Corpse Bride. HBO Max welcomes Tim Burton’s characteristically ghoulish stop-motion classic, in which a shy Victorian gent is obliged to choose between a living and an undead bride. The film, which Burton directed with Mike Johnson, won an Annie and was nominated for an Oscar in 2006. (Mar 1, HBO Max)
