Top Story: Despite A Large Number Of Detractors, Animation Guild Members Ratify New Contract

Groundbreaking animation projects sometimes come from the unlikeliest places. Last year it was Sony Pictures Animation, which upended cg animated features with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Now, Amazon Prime looks ready to shake up series animation with Undone, from Bojack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Bojack writer Kate Purdy.

Amazon released the full series trailer for Undone this weekend, and announced that it will debut the series on September 13. We hear that all eight episodes of the show will be available on that day.

Undone’s fresh look — painterly rotoscope paired with actual oil-painted backgrounds — is something that hasn’t been seen before in series animation, and proves that there’s plenty of room for new techniques and approaches in series animation when producers are willing to take the risk. The look of the show was developed by Dutch filmmaker Hisko Hulsing (Junkyard, animation sequences in Montage of Heck), who also directs the series.

The story follows Alma (Rosa Salazar), a 28-year-old living in San Antonio, Texas, who discovers she has a new relationship to time after nearly dying in a car accident. She learns to harness this new ability in order to find out the truth about the death of her father (Bob Odenkirk).

Production on the series was handled between Amsterdam-based Submarine and Austin, Texas-based Minnow Mountain. Michael Eisner’s Tornante Productions and Amazon Studios produced the show. Bob-Waksberg and Purdy are executive producers alongside Noel Bright, Steven A. Cohen, and Tommy Pallotta.

In addition to Salazar and Odenkirk, other voices include Angelique Cabral, Constance Marie, Siddarth Dhananjay, and Daveed Diggs, with guest roles by John Corbett, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Sheila Vand, and Tyler Posey.
