‘The Freak Brothers’ Wraps Production On Eight-Episode First Season; Cast Announced
The Freak Brothers is coming: after a period of radio silence, it has been announced that the animated series has completed production on its eight-episode first season. The original greenlight announcement set the show to debut in early 2020, but little had been divulged about the show’s status since then.
In 2019, we reported that the show was in development via WTG Enterprises, who own the IP of the original comic, The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. The underground comic was created by Gilbert Shelton in 1968. The tv series centers on the three stoner leads of the comic who, after smoking a magical strain of weed in 1969, time-travel to 2020, bringing their 1960s San Francisco attitude with them.
The three leads will be voiced by Woody Harrelson, John Goodman, and Pete Davidson. Andrea Savage and La La Anthony have been unveiled as new additions to the cast, which also includes Tiffany Haddish, Adam Devine, Blake Anderson, rapper Schoolboy Q, and veteran voice actor Phil LaMarr.
WTG’s Courtney Solomon and Mark Canton executive-produced alongside King of the Hill and American Dad!’s Alan Cohen and Alan Freedland, who are writers and showrunners. Harrelson, Haddish, Davidson, Devine, Anderson, Shelton, and Manfred Mroczkowski are also executive-producing the series.
Starburns Industries and Pure Imagination Studios, the studios behind Rick and Morty, animated on the first season. The pilot episode was written by Daniel Lehrer and Jeremy Lehrer-Graiwer.
Lionsgate has partnered with WTG Enterprises, handling global distribution rights. The Freak Brothers does not yet have a broadcaster or streamer attached.
Lionsgate president of worldwide television distribution Jim Packer said of the partnership:
We’re thrilled to partner with some of the best writers and producers in adult animation and the perfect cast to recapture the subversive underground vibe of the original ’60s comic series with characters and story lines that are just as funny, relevant, and watchable today. Just as the comics resonated with readers around the world, audiences will want to tune into the wild, boundary-pushing adventures of this group of remarkably human misfits time after time.
The series’ website indicates the show is coming in 2021, but no further specifics are given.
