Astérix & Obélix: The Big Fight Astérix & Obélix: The Big Fight

Netflix has released the first teaser for its upcoming series Astérix & Obélix: The Big Fight, which is slated to premiere in spring 2025.

Asterix, which is set in 50 BC and takes place in a Gaulish-village that resists Julius Caesar’s forces thanks to a magic potion that gives its residents super-strength, is an icon of French comics and popular in many parts of the world, but has never been able to penetrate the U.S. market in a meaningful way. This Netflix series could play an important role in reintroducing the character to American audiences.

Here’s what has been announced about the series:

  • The new series was created by French actor and comedian Alain Chabat, who previously wrote, directed, and performed in the 2002 live-action Asterix film Astérix & Obélix : Mission Cléopâtre, which was a megahit in France and went on to gross $128 million globally. Chabat is also directing the new series with Fabrice Joubert, a veteran Dreamorks and Illumination animator. The series is produced by Alain Goldman.
  • The series is adapted from the 1964 Asterix comic Le Combat des chefs (The Battle of the Chieftains), written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo. It was the seventh comic in the Asterix series.
  • Series synopsis: “Rome is desperate to conquer the last independent village in Gaul and the home of Asterix and Obelix. The secret to the Gauls’ battle superiority is a magic potion, but when the potion master loses his memory, the villagers are left to their own devices against the might of Rome.”
  • Toulouse, France-based TAT Productions (Terra Willy, Pil’s Adventures) is the animation studio.
