HBO Max Greenlights ‘Poor Devil,’ Its First Adult European Animated Series
As it begins its rollout in Europe, HBO Max has announced its first adult animated pickup from the continent.
The Warnermedia-owned streaming platform has greenlit Poor Devil (Pobre diablo), a series from Spain’s Buendia Estudios. The show stars 18-year-old Stan, the son of Satan, who would rather be a Broadway star than follow in his father’s footsteps.
Announcing the show, Miguel Salvat, commissioning editor and vp of original programming at HBO Spain, said:
We all know people who have had to make a decision whether to join the family business or follow in their parents’ footsteps. Poor Devil obviously takes this to the extreme and does so in a very funny way, following in the rich tradition of Warnermedia’s adult animations. I’m expecting a lot of people are going to instantly fall in love with the Stan and his demonic cat.
The 8 x 20 min series is created and written by Miguel Esteban, Joaquín Reyes, and Ernesto Sevilla, with Esteban directing and Helena Pozuelo onboard as co-writer. Esteban is an experienced comedy writer, having co-created live-action shows like Netflix’s The Neighbor and Comedy Central’s The End of Comedy.
Salvat and Antonio Trashorras are executive-producing for HBO Max. Ignacio Corrales, David Troncoso, and Sonia Martínez are the executive producers for Buendía Estudios. The animation will be provided by Rokyn Animation Studios in Granada, Spain. The show will launch in 2022.
Worldwide, there were 69.4 million HBO Max and HBO subscribers at the end of Q3 2021. HBO Max is available in the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean, and — as of today — six European countries: Spain, Andorra, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark.
Variety and C21Media first reported the news of Poor Devil.
