Adult Swim Announces Its First Spanish-Language Series, ‘Women Wearing Shoulder Pads’

Adult Swim has announced its first-ever Spanish-language series, Women Wearing Shoulder Pads, about a wealthy Spanish woman living in Ecuador.

The stop-motion series is created by Gonzalo Cordova (writer on Tuca & Bertie, Adam Ruins Everything) and will be produced by Mexico City-based studio Cinema Fantasma. The studio has a strong track record working with Warner Bros. Discovery and has done IDs for Rick and Morty and Mr. Pickles. Cinema Fantasma also produces the HBO Max Latin America series Frankelda’s Book of Spooks.

Plot details are still scant, but according to Adult Swim, the show will follow its protagonist as she navigates the “complicated world of love, family, commercials, and cuyes, a.k.a. South American guinea pigs.” All of the show’s voice actors will be Spanish-speaking women, with each 15-minute episode subtitled in English.

Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen said in a release:

While we’ve all seen a million stop-motion shows in Spanish featuring an all-female cast centered on the plight of guinea pigs, Gonzalo’s unique voice and the visually rich stop-motion from Cinema Fantasma meant that we couldn’t pass up on Women Wearing Shoulder Pads.

During a New York Comic Con panel, Adult Swim also announced it has ordered a third season of the popular animated comedy series Yolo, titled Yolo: Rainbow Trinity. Led by Smiling Friends co-creator Michael Cusack, the series turns on two best friends in Australia who get caught up in all kinds of ridiculous scenarios. Season two (trailer below) debuted in January of this year and, according to Adult Swim, was a ratings hit that ranked “number two in its timeslot across cable in key demos.”
