Acclaimed filmmaker Andreas Hykade has been appointed director of the animation and visual effects program at Germany’s Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg in Ludwigsburg. He replaces Thomas Haegele, who retired in December 2014.

With films for adults and children to his name, the 46-year-old Hykade is best known for his award-winning “country films” trilogy: We Lived in Grass (1995), Ring of Fire (2000), and The Runt (2005).

His most recent short is Nuggets (2015):

He has also created the popular children’s television series Tom and the Slice of Bread with Strawberry Jam & Honey (2004-12) and had his work shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2007.

Hykade has been teaching animation at the Filmakademie since 2002, when the Institute of Animation, Visual Effects and Digital Postproduction was founded. He has also taught between 2005-2010 at Kunsthochschule Kassel in Germany, and animation courses at Harvard University in 2008.

Two films created at the Institute—Ophelia: Love & Privacy_Settings and Hedgehog’s Visit—were selected for Cartoon Brew’s 2014 Student Animation Festival.
