Netflix Will Debut ‘Nimona’ At Annecy This June
Netflix will debut its highly anticipated feature adaptation of ND Stevenson’s Nimona at Annecy on June 14, before the film hits the platform later this summer.
Nick Bruno and Troy Quane’s Nimona is now set up as the third big Hollywood animated feature to debut in France in the coming months, following announcements that Pixar’s Elemental will bow at Cannes and Dreamworks’ Ruby Gillman will premiere at Annecy.
Originally set up at Blue Sky Studios before that company was shut down by Disney, Nimona is animated by DNEG Animation and is being produced out of the recently launched animation division at Annapurna.
Nimona synopsis:
A knight is framed for a crime he didn’t commit and the only person who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a shape-shifting teen who might also be a monster he’s sworn to destroy. Set in a techno-medieval world unlike anything animation has tackled before, this is a story about the labels we assign to people and the shapeshifter who refuses to be defined by anyone.
The film’s voice cast headlines Chloë Grace Moretz, Riz Ahmed, and Eugene Lee Yang. Karen Ryan, Julie Zackary, and Roy Lee are producing with Megan Ellison, Robert L. Baird, Andrew Millstein, and John Powers Middleton as executive producers.
On Wednesday, June 14, Annecy will screen Nimona with Bruno, Quane, Stevenson, Ryan, Zackary, and production designer Aidan Sugano all in attendance. The film’s representatives will then host a making-of session on Thursday, June 15.
Other animated films to be teased by Netflix at Annecy include Robert Smigel, Robert Marianetti, and David Wachtenheim’s Leo; Sam Fell’s Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget; and Anthony Stacchi’s The Monkey King. The streamer will also share early looks at two series, Blue Eye Samurai and Exploding Kittens.
