Yet another eye-catching trailer from China’s booming animation industry has reached us. The film in question is Shuo Feng — Po Zhen Zi, an action epic directed by Zheng Wu and based on an internet novel by A Nu.

From what we understand, the film is set in the eighth century, during China’s Tang dynasty. The story draws inspiration from real historical battles, which pitted Chinese forces against the Islamic Abbasid Caliphate and Tibetan Empire in Central Asia. Watch the hyper-kinetic, elaborately composited trailer below:

The film is produced by Nice Boat Animation, a production company of 130-plus people based in Tianjin. The studio is known for its feature Dahufa, a dark dystopian drama that became the first Chinese film to be rated PG-13 by its producers. In April, its action-comedy series White Cat Legend premiered on Chinese streaming platform Bilibili to rave user reviews, according to the state-run China Daily newspaper.

No release date has yet been announced for Shuo Feng — Po Zhen Zi — the trailer just says “Coming Soon.” China’s theaters have been steadily reopening since July, and as of this week they’ll be allowed to operate at 75% capacity. Cinema schedules have contained plenty of animated films, both new releases (Mr. Miao) and catalogue titles (Coco, Big Fish & Begonia, White Snake).
