Harold and the Purple Crayon Harold and the Purple Crayon

Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for its upcoming animation/live-action hybrid adaptation of the iconic children’s book Harold and the Purple Crayon, which will hit theaters on August 2.

Harold and the Purple Crayon is directed by Oscar nominee Carlos Saldanha, who has a long history of helming animated films including several from the Ice Age series, Rio, and Ferdinand. The film, written by David Guion and Michael Handelman, is based on the 1955 book of the same name.

Harold and the Purple Crayon is Saldanha’s live-action debut and will mark the first time that the classic book has been adapted as a feature film.

Sony’s synopsis for the film reads:

Inside of his book, adventurous Harold can make anything come to life simply by drawing it. After he grows up and draws himself off the book’s pages and into the physical world, Harold finds he has a lot to learn about real life—and that his trusty purple crayon may set off more hilarious hijinks than he thought possible. When the power of unlimited imagination falls into the wrong hands, it will take all of Harold and his friends’ creativity to save both the real world and his own.

Harold and the Purple Crayon stars Zachary Levi in the titular role, who is joined by Lil Rel Howery, Benjamin Bottani, Jemaine Clement, Tanya Reynolds, Alfred Molina, and Zooey Deschanel.
