‘The Day The Earth Blew Up’ Gets Theatrical Launch Date, Will Compete In This Year’s Oscar Race
Ketchup Entertainment announced today that it has set a North American release date for the Warner Bros. Animation feature The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie. The film will launch theatrically on Friday, February 28, 2025.
Further, the studio is planning to qualify The Day the Earth Blew Up in this year’s Oscar animation race, meaning that the film will receive at least a one-week run in one of the Academy’s six qualifying U.S. metro areas by the end of the year. The film will have its North American premiere this Saturday in Los Angeles as part of the Animation is Film festival. Tickets to the L.A. screening are already sold out.
“For generations, the Looney Tunes have held a soft spot in the hearts of fans the world over, including my own,” Gareth West, CEO of Ketchup Entertainment said in a statement. “It’s a true pleasure to bring into theaters Peter Browngardt’s hilariously smart, emotional, and gorgeously rendered story for fans and movie-lovers of all ages to experience a wholly new and original cinematic adventure with our friends, Porky and Daffy.”
The Day the Earth Blew Up, which marks the feature directorial debut of Uncle Grandpa creator and Looney Tunes Cartoons executive producer Pete Browngardt, stars Daffy Duck and Porky Pig as they try to save the world from an alien invasion plot. It premiered to a strongly positive reaction at the Annecy animation festival last June, and has already launched theatrically in some international territories, including Germany.
Key credits include Eric Bauza, Candi Milo, Peter MacNicol, Wayne Knight, and Laraine Newman as lead voice actors, Alex Kirwan (supervising producer), Nick Cross (art director), Aaron Spurgeon (production designer), and Browngardt and Sam Register in the role of executive producer.
Uniquely, Browngardt acknowledged the board artists for the film’s writing, which is why the film credits sports a longer-than-usual list of writers. They are Darrick Bachman, Browngardt, Kevin Costello, Andrew Dickman, David Gemmill, Alex Kirwan, Ryan Kramer, Jason Reicher, Michael Ruocco, Johnny Ryan, and Eddie Trigueros.
