The Super Mario Bros. Movie The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Coinciding with the company’s New York Comic-Con presentation, Nintendo today launched a livestream in which the first trailer for Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie was screened.

In the lead-up to the teaser trailer, there was months of discussion about the casting of Chris Pratt as Mario. More recently, with the release of the teaser poster, fans have been discussing the size of Mario’s ass. Expect there to be plenty of other discussions about this movie in the six months between now and its release.

Here’s the trailer:

Film details:

  • The Super Mario Bros. Movie is directed by multi-Emmy-nominated Teen Titans Go! showrunners Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel (The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part), co-writer of Illumination’s Minions: The Rise of Gru, this year’s biggest animated hit at the global box office.
  • The film is produced by Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto. It is co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo and released worldwide by Universal Pictures.
  • Earlier this week, Nintendo also released the film’s first poster (below), featuring Mario looking across the Mushroom kingdom with Toad in front of him making an inviting gesture to the overalled plumber.
  • First revealed in 2017, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was originally supposed to hit theaters in December of this year but has now been pushed back to April 7, 2023.
  • Nintendo recently purchased its own cg animation studio, Dynamo Pictures (now called Nintendo Pictures Co., Ltd.), however, this film is Illumination through and through and was animated by Illumination Mac Guff in Paris. What effect Nintendo’s own studio may have on a Mario cinematic universe or animated adaptations of other Nintendo franchises remains to be seen.
  • The film’s key voice cast includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. Charles Martinet, the original voice of Mario, also has a role in the film.
