The Spider-Verse is welcoming three new directors. Sony Pictures Animation’s sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will be helmed by Kemp Powers (center in photo above), Justin K. Thompson (right), and as previously announced Joaquim Dos Santos (left).

Powers is co-director and co-writer of Pixar’s Soul, and is currently Oscar-nominated for his screenplay for the live-action drama One Night in Miami. Thompson was the production designer on the original Spider-Verse as well as Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and its sequel. Dos Santos is a seasoned director and storyboard artist who has directed on Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, among other series.

The original Spider-Verse grossed a strong $373.5 million worldwide and earned plaudits and awards aplenty, including an Oscar for best animated feature. It was directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman from a script by Rothman and Phil Lord.

Lord and his frequent collaborator Chris Miller are writing the sequel alongside David Callaham. Lord, Miller, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Christina Steinberg are all returning to produce, with Alonzo Ruvalcaba co-producing. Ramsey is executive-producing alongside Aditya Sood.

The film is due to open in theaters on October 7, 2022.
