Sneaks Sneaks

With major American studios apparently having forgotten that they should produce and release animated films, smaller distributors are filling the void with indie releases. Coming soon: Briarcliff Entertainment’s Sneaks, which will release in U.S. theaters on April 18, 2025.

Here’s the trailer:

Situated in the long animated tradition of stories about inanimate objects come to life, this film brings shoes to life. Per the synopsis, Sneaks

…follows the adventures of Ty, a misguided designer sneaker who doesn’t know life outside the comforts of his velvet-lined shoe box. After his sister is stolen by a shady collector, Ty must venture into NYC to find and rescue her. In his adventure, Ty meets a rag-tag group of footwear friends from all walks of life who help him find the courage to step outside of his shoe box and find his “sole-mate.”

The film is directed by Rob Edwards (screenwriter, Disney’s Treasure Planet, The Princess and the Frog) and Chris Jenkins (director, 10 Lives, Duck Duck Goose) from a script by Edwards.

The film was originally revealed in 2018 and at the time, Pixar veteran Teddy Newton was attached as director. Edwards was announced as director in 2021.

Pre-production, design, and storyboard work was done at Toronto’s House of Cool (Ferdinand), and the animation was produced at Mumbai’s Assemblage (Arctic Dogs, Netflix’s Wolf King).
