Top Story: ‘The Wild Robot’ And ‘Arcane’ Lead 52nd Annie Award Nominations

Robot Chicken and BoJack Horseman producer Shadowmachine steps out of profane animated television, and into profane animated feature film, when its R-rated Hell & Back arrives October 2, just in time for Halloween.

How profane is Shadowmachine’s theatrical stop-motion debut, co-directed by Human Giant’s Tom Gianas and Robot Chicken’s Ross Shuman? Let’s just say that you won’t find a haggard fortune teller accusing the leads of The Boxtrolls or Shaun the Sheep of raping their hands during chronic masturbation, which is just one of the many adult jokes peppering Hell & Back’s new red-band trailer. Watch at your own risk:

Hell & Back will be distributed theatrically by Freestyle Releasing, whose top-performers are faith-based films like God’s Not Dead and Left Behind. Its voice cast is led by jokers like How to Train Your Dragon’s T.J. Miller and Bolt’s Nick Swardson, who play two dudebros named Augie and Remy that journey to the Devil’s hellacious kingdom to rescue their pal Curt, voiced by The Lorax’s Rob Riggle. Along the way, they run into a demonic Mila Kunis and an angelic Susan Sarandon, as well as comedians and actors like Danny McBride, Kumail Nanjiani, Jennifer Coolidge, Bob Odenkirk, and Brian Posehn.

“It’s R-rated, and it’s in a space that isn’t usually R-rated,” Miller told Yahoo Movies yesterday. “R-rated stop-motion comedy: It just doesn’t happen.” Let us know below what you think of Hell & Back’s foray into the world of adult animated entertainment, and whether you’d like to see more adult cartoons of its kind.
