Pulsar Content Boards ‘Dragon Princess,’ A Ghibliesque Fantasy Feature From France

My Father’s Dragon isn’t the only European animated feature about dragons that will be made widely available this year.

Paris-based Pulsar Content has taken worldwide sales for Dragon Princess, an animated family feature from French studio Ankama. The film tells the tale of Bristle, a girl raised by dragons who embarks on a journey of discovery in the world of humans. There she learns the meaning of friendship, solidarity — and greed.

Ankama made its name with role-playing games like Dofus and Wakfu, which it has developed into transmedia franchises. Beyond video games, it publishes comics, creates board games, and produces animation, including series based on Dofus and Wakfu. It co-produced the 2017 feature Mutafukaz.

Dragon Princess is directed by Jean-Jacques Denis (Dofus: The Treasures of Kerubim, Dofus Book I: Julith) and Anthony Roux, a comics artist and director who co-founded Ankama. Roux also wrote and produced Dragon Princess, which Ankama plans to develop into a franchise including four features.

The film was featured as a work in progress at Annecy last year. Gebeka released it on December 15 in France, where it has grossed a modest $577,228 to date (according to Boxofficemojo.com). Pulsar will introduce it to international buyers at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Paris this week.

Dragon Princess is the first animation acquisition for Pulsar, which was founded by Marie Garrett and Gilles Sousa in 2019. The film will appeal thanks to the “IP’s quality, appropriate target audience, and its great potential to develop in time through sequels and spin-offs,” the pair told Variety, which first reported the news of the acquisition.
