Watch: New ‘Nimona’ Footage Debuts In Netflix Promo
Last week, we got the first teaser for Nick Bruno and Troy Quane’s upcoming Netflix original animated feature Nimona, headed to the platform on June 30.
That teaser, however, features mostly storybook-inspired animation that is unlike what appears in the finished feature. Now, tucked away in a new Netflix promo for its June releases, we’ve got access to more footage from the actual film which gives us a clearer idea of what to expect when it releases next month.
The Nimona bit starts at the 6:33 mark and includes the best look yet and Riz Ahmed’s Ballister Boldheart. There are also more clips of Nimona shape shifting as she and Ballister escape a castle that looks like a mix of Medieval Times and The Office.
As we said when the teaser came out, Nimona will look aesthetically familiar to fans of Patrick Osborne’s Oscar-winning short film Feast. Osborne was the original director of Nimona, back when the project was at Blue Sky Studios before that studio was shuttered by Disney following the 20th Century Fox acquisition.
The similarities are far clearer now that we’ve got more footage to look at. Many of the textures seen in the clip, especially in the backgrounds, are entirely flat. There is an intentional lack of detail in many of the shots and the world features more sharp lines and angles than what we’re used to seeing from a lot of big studio cg-animated films.
Maybe that will be off-putting to some viewers, but it’s exciting to see a big-budget feature take an aesthetic risk. It’s certainly paid off recently for films like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The Bad Guys, and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Time will tell if it pays off for Nimona.
