Nimona Nimona

Released ten days ago on streaming, Nimona has rocketed up to the #3 spot on Netflix’s weekly top 10 chart for the week of July 3-9.

Moving up from the ninth spot in its first week, Nimona doubled its viewed hours from 5.5 million to 11.5 million. The film also more than doubled its views from 3.2M to 6.7M. (Its first week only tallied the Friday-Sunday period, similar to how box office weekends are reported.)

The news of Nimona’s continued strong performance is sure to be well received at Netflix, since this is an edgier offer than many of their other original animation productions. While still firmly in the category of family-friendly films, Nimona shows that there is an opportunity to push in a more punk-rock, anarchic direction than mainstream studios are willing to explore.

It’s also good news for Netflix Animation, which is coming off a challenging 2022, when it launched a string of films that missed with audiences, including three features that never made its own top ten list: Apollo 10 1⁄2: A Space Age Childhood, Wendell & Wild, and My Father’s Dragon.

But since then, the streamer’s last three Netflix Animation-produced films have each debuted in the top 10 and spent multiple weeks on the list. Those films are Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, The Magician’s Elephant, and now, Nimona.

The only other animation-related film in the Netflix Top 10 this week was the 2017 hybrid Woody Woodpecker, which landed at #10 with 6.3M hours of viewing time and 4.2M views. That’s even more impressive considering that the film is unavailable on the U.S. version of the service. It has performed well on Netflix in Australia, Brazil, and New Zealand.

No animated series made their top 10 tv ratings this week.
