Netflix’s ‘One Piece’ Live-Action Remake Tops Streamer’s Global TV Viewing List
Netflix’s live-action One Piece adaptation was the streamer’s most popular series last week despite only being available for three of the seven days included in the rankings.
Topping Netflix’s tv list in three days is impressive, but there is more to One Piece’s debut than just a first-place finish. The series was in the top 10 in 93 countries worldwide, number one in 46 of those. The show amassed 18.5 million views and 140.1 million hours viewed.
Netflix only started sharing the number of views for each title in June, so that metric isn’t useful for comparing titles released before then.
Instead, if we look at the hours viewed number, One Piece had Netflix’s fifth-biggest opening for an English-language series this year. Based on that metric, Netflix’s most-watched English-language series debuts in 2023 have been:
- Ginny & Georgia season two, 180.5 million.
- The Night Agent, 168.7 million.
- Outer Banks season three, 155 million.
- Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, 148.3 million.
- One Piece, 140.1 million
A strong debut for One Piece is great news for Netflix, which struggled to find an audience for its 2021 Cowboy Bebop live-action remake. The streamer’s top 10 lists don’t go back that far, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, that series only pulled in 74 million viewing hours between its debut on November 19 and its cancelation on December 9, less than a month later.
With its impressive debut and the approval of critics and fans alike, One Piece looks unlikely to face the same fate as Cowboby Bebop.
Three animated series rounded out last week’s top 10 list. Season eight of perennial performer Cocomelon finished in eighth, season eight of Gabby’s Dollhouse was ninth, and the fifth and final season of Matt Groening’s Disenchantment landed in tenth.
After a first place debut last week, The Monkey King had another strong week on the English-language film list, finishing in second place with 10.6 million hours viewed and 6.6 million views. The Boss Baby made the top 10 for the eleventh time, raking in 8.5 million hours viewed and 5.2 million views.
