Before arriving on Netflix, the film will compete at the 50th Ottawa International Animation Festival. It is one of only seven titles selected for the festival’s feature competition, its largest lineup to date, but still selective enough to stand out as a ringing endorsement.

Kenji Nakamura returns as chief director, with Tomoaki Koshida directing from a screenplay by Yasumi Atarashi. Studio Kafka and EOTA handled animation production, while Twin Engine produced and distributed the film. The first two chapters are currently streaming on Netflix.

The trilogy follows the mysterious Medicine Seller, who exorcises supernatural beings created by human passions and grudges. Its story is set within the Ōoku, the women’s quarters of the imperial palace, with each installment focusing on women of progressively higher rank.

After spotlighting a newly arrived maid in 2024’s The Phantom in the Rain and the Ōoku’s elite concubines in 2025’s The Ashes of Rage, The Curse of the Serpent turns its attention to Yukiko, the emperor’s lawful wife and the highest-ranking woman in the household.
