Spellbound Spellbound

Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for Spellbound, the new animated feature from Skydance Animation and director Vicky Jenson (Shrek, Shark Tale). The film is set to release on the streamer November 22, 2024.

The film follows the adventures of Ellian, the young daughter of the rulers of Lumbria, who must go on a quest to save her family and kingdom after a mysterious spell transforms her parents into monsters.

Some notes on the film:

  • With the release of this trailer, director Jenson also shed more light on the project in an interview with Netflix’s internal magazine Tudum. Said Jenson, “For me, the story [of Spellbound] is even more universal than the specifics of this family dynamic. For me, it speaks to kids and their parents, to the kind of alienation that can happen as we grow up, and the steps we have to make towards each other to weather it together and come through the other side with better understanding.”
  • This is Skydance Animation’s second full-length feature, following Peggy Holmes’ Luck, which was released on Apple TV+ in 2022. It is Skydance Animation’s first release on Netflix, after the company signed a multi-year distribution pact that was announced last fall.
  • Jenson is directing from a script written by Lauren Hynek & Elizabeth Martin and Julia Miranda. The film features a score by EGOT-winning composer Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Tangled) and lyrics by Glenn Slater (Tangled, the Broadway adaptation of The Little Mermaid). Voice cast is led by Rachel Zegler, John Lithgow, Jenifer Lewis, Nathan Lane, Tituss Burgess, Javier Bardem, and Nicole Kidman.
  • The film is produced by John Lasseter, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Bruce Anderson for Skydance Animation.
