Warner Bros.’s Coyote vs. Acme has found its live-action star: WWE wrestler-turned-actor John Cena (Peacemaker).

Dave Green (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows), who was announced as the hybrid film’s director back in 2019, remains on board as helmer.

The latest version of the screenplay was written by Samy Burch. The film is being adapted from a satirical piece of the same name which appeared in a 1990 issue of The New Yorker. In the piece, Wile E. Coyote sues Acme, his regular weapons supplier, for its consistently malfunctioning products.

The Hollywood Reporter offers more detail on how they’re expanding that story into a feature-length project:

The feature will tell the story of a down-on-his-luck (human) attorney who takes on Wile E. as a client in his suit against Acme over its defective products, only to discover that his boss at his former law firm is representing Acme. Cena will play the former boss in the feature, which seems like part courtroom drama, part family comedy.

Coyote vs. Acme is set to begin live-action photography in New Mexico at the end of March. Chris DeFaria and James Gunn are producing. Warner Animation Group is overseeing the film’s animation.

Current release date: July 21, 2023.
