GKIDS Acquires North American Rights to Goya-Award Winner ‘Another Day of Life’
GKIDS announced today that it has acquired North American distribution rights to Another Day of Life, a European co-production that premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. The U.S. animation distributor will release the mature-themed film theatrically in 2019.
Directed by Raúl de la Fuente and Damian Nenow, the film uses motion capture-based cg animation, as well as live-action interviews and archival footage to tell a story based on the non-fiction book of the same title by Polish journalist Ryszard “Ricardo” Kapuściński.
Set in the African nation of Angola during a violent civil war following its independence from Portugal in 1975, Another Day of Life follows Kapuściński as he risks his life by driving into the heart of the conflict to find the isolated rebel leader Farrusco.
Another Day of Life was produced by Platige Films (Poland) and Kanaki Films (Spain), and co-produced by Walking The Dog (Belgium), Wüste Film (Germany), Animations Fabrik (Germany), and Puppetworks (Hungary).
“We are incredibly proud to release Another Day of Life,” said GKIDS president David Jesteadt. “The film brings Kapuściński’s writing to visceral life, in a thrilling story of a journalist’s obligations during war that will stay with audiences long after they leave the theater.”
Following its Cannes premiere, Another Day of Life went on to win multiple accolades around the world, most notably picking up honors for best animated film at Spain’s Goya Awards and the European Film Awards.
The film’s rights are being sold worldwide by Indie Sales, and the all-rights deal for North America was negotiated by GKIDS CEO and Founder Eric Beckman and Nicolas Eschbach for Indie Sales.
This acquisition joins two other upcoming adult-targeted titles from GKIDS: Funan, about the Cambodian genocide, and Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles, centered on the making of one of the famous filmmaker’s documentaries. All three are expected to open theatrically in the U.S. this year.
