First Trailer For Dreamworks Animation’s ‘Dog Man’ Adaptation
Dreamworks Animation has released the first trailer for Dog Man, based on Dav Pilkey’s series of children’s books. The books are a spinoff of Pilkey’s Captain Underpants book series, which inspired the earlier Dreamworks film Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie in 2017.
The new Dog Man feature is set to release via Universal Pictures on January 31, 2025.
Dog Man is directed by Emmy-winning tv veteran Peter Hastings, whose credits include Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, Lilo & Stitch: The Series, and Catscratch. Hastings has also been involved with various series iterations of Pilkey’s work including The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants. Karen Foster (Spirit Untamed) is producing.
The film’s highly stylized cg design and animation, which keeps in the spirit of the earlier Captain Underpants film, was produced by U.K.-headquartered Jellyfish Pictures, which previously handled production duties on the Dreamworks feature Spirit Untamed. The studio is also handling animation duties on Netflix’s upcoming The Twits.
Here is the official synopsis, via Dreamworks:
When a faithful police dog and his human police officer owner are injured together on the job, a harebrained but life-saving surgery fuses the two of them together and Dog Man is born. Dog Man is sworn to protect and serve—and fetch, sit and roll over.
As Dog Man embraces his new identity and strives to impress his Chief, he must stop the pretty evil plots of feline supervillain Petey the Cat. Petey’s latest plan is to clone himself, creating the kitten Lil Petey, to double his ability to do crime stuff. Things get complicated, though, when Lil Petey forges an unexpected bond with Dog Man.
When Lil Petey falls into the clutches of a common enemy, Dog Man and Petey reluctantly join forces in an action-packed race against time to rescue the young kitten. In the process, they discover the power of family (and kittens!) to bring even the most hostile foes together.
Voice cast is led by Pete Davidson, Isla Fisher, Lil Rel Howery, Isla Fisher, Poppy Liu, Stephen Root, Billy Boyd, and Ricky Gervais.
