The Green Gummy Bear From The Decades-Old Viral Internet Song ‘Gummibär’ Is Getting A Theatrical Feature
“I’m a Gummy Bear (The Gummy Bear Song),” a nearly-twenty-year-old viral internet song featuring the green gummy bear Gummibär, is headed to the bigscreen.
The 90-minute cg theatrical film Gummibär and Friends: Operation Cotton Candy, is being produced by Indian animation studio Toonz Media Group, which previously produced the Gummibär and Friends series. It is being co-produced with Gummybear International Inc. (GBI), a company run by the song’s composer Christian Schneider. The film is currently being sold at the European Film Market, which starts today in Berlin. It is being prepped for theatrical release in 2026.
Pete Dodd, who directed the Danish animated feature Freddy Frogface (Orla Frøsnapper), is attached to direct the film. A veteran animator, Dodd has also animated on Frankenweenie, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and The Tale of Despereaux, as well as various Gummibär projects in the past.
Dodd will direct from a script by multi-BAFTA-winner Dan Berlinka (Dixi, Lagging, Rhyme Time Town). Robert Chandler (producer, The Amazing Maurice, The Canterville Ghost) is aboard as creative producer.
The plot:
Gummibär unwittingly finds himself at the center of an epic spy mission. With his loyal friends Kala, a martial arts expert, and Harry, a science enthusiast, by his side, Gummibär must rely on his courage, creativity, and undeniable charm to save the planet from impending doom.
In a statement, Chandler offered more details about the film’s tone and plot:
Gummibär is so cinematic! I see his pedigree stretching back through Jim Carrey via Jerry Lewis to Buster Keaton. He’s a disruptor with a heart of gold. He doesn’t mean to cause chaos, but chaos happens around him. The idea of putting Gummibär into a spy movie was too delicious to resist. He thinks he’s signing up to test new Cotton Candy flavors but gets involved instead in an impossible spy mission. Before anyone can stop the process, he and his friends, Kala and Harry, are the only spies standing between planet Earth and its colorful destruction. Watch out, world!
