The Wild Robot The Wild Robot

Dreamworks Animation is developing a sequel to its latest film The Wild Robot. The news was confirmed this morning by the film’s director and writer Chris Sanders in an interview at Deadline’s Contenders event in London.

“100% yes there are absolutely plans for a second one,” Sanders said during his talk.

It remains to be seen how involved Sanders will be with the sequel. Each of the three previous films he directed – Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, and The Croods – have spawned at least one sequel, but Sanders has never directed one of those films, though he has sometimes been involved with the story or executive produced the sequels.

The Wild Robot is based on the illustrated novel by Peter Brown. There are two other titles in Brown’s series: The Wild Robot Escapes and The Wild Robot Protects, providing established source material for subsequent films in the series.

Universal released The Wild Robot last month, and the $78 million production continues to perform well in its third weekend. It is currently projected to earn around $13.8 million in its third frame, which would lift its overall domestic to over $84 million. Internationally, the film has grossed an additional $37 million to date.
