Cartoon Saloon And Lighthouse Studios Will Host Kilkenny Animated Later This Month
Back and in person this year, Ireland’s Kilkenny Animated, hosted by Cartoon Saloon and Lighthouse Studios, will kick off on September 30 and run through October 2.
The event, now in its 4th year, is dedicated to visual storytelling and incorporates animation, print cartooning, and illustration in a series of exhibitions, talks, performances, workshops, and experiences.
Highlights from the upcoming Irish event include:
- A ‘Roaring 20s’-themed opening night gala featuring live jazz music and projections of cartoons from the era.
- Comedy and animation will meet as stand-up comedian Dylan Moran performs accompanied by projected original illustrations. Additionally, New Yorker illustrator Matt Diffee will present stand-up gag cartoon shows and illustrator and stand-up comedian Aoife Dooley will perform a show.
- Cartoon Saloon will host a sneak peek at the studio’s upcoming Netflix original feature My Father’s Dragon, directed by Nora Twomey.
- American author-illustrator Cece Bell will host a talk about her graphic novel El Deafo, the source material for Apple TV+’s animated series adaptation which was animated at Lighthouse Studios.
- Dave Wasson, creator of Netflix’s The Cuphead Show, and art director Andrea Fernandez will speak with Lighthouse Studios’ Gilly Fogg about adapting a video game as a series. Cuphead Show was also animated at Lighthouse.
- Cartoon Saloon founder Tomm Moore will speak with comic author and artist Declan Shalvey about his work on several comic book series including Marvel’s Moon Knight.
- Workshops will be hosted by Screen Ireland, Animation Skillnet, National Talent Academy – Animation, and Animation Ireland.
