The line-up for Cartoon Movie, Europe’s premier pitching platform for animated features, has been unveiled.

Projects will be presented by high-profile filmmakers including Louis Clichy (Asterix: The Secret of the Magic Potion), Remi Chayé (Calamity, a Childhood of Martha Jane Cannary), Edmunds Jansons (Jacob, Mimmi and the Talking Dogs), Anca Damian (Marona’s Fantastic Tale), and Claude Barras (My Life as a Zucchini). Films we’ve covered before will be featured, including Mars Express and Titina.

Here are key facts and highlights from the upcoming edition, which is due to be held in person in Bordeaux, France on March 8–10, 2022. Keep an eye on Cartoon Brew for deeper coverage of individual projects.

  • In all, 57 projects have been selected from 114 submissions. That’s similar to 55 in 2021, but below the 66 chosen at the 2020 and 2019 events (the former was held just before France was locked down).
  • The 57 projects represent a total budget of €266.3 million (USD$302 million) and 77 hours of animation.
  • As always, France is the most prolific country, serving as main producer on 15 projects. Spain is next with eight, followed by Belgium and Norway with five each. The U.K., a major European producer of animated series, has zero.
  • There’s a higher proportion of projects for adults and young adults than in previous years: 21 projects (or 37%). We believe that’s a record for the event.
  • Around half the projects — 28 — are for families. Seven are for children, one for teenagers.
  • In terms of stage of production, the biggest group is projects in development, which make up 41% of the total. Those at concept stage account for 33%, in production 14%, and at “sneak preview” 12%.
