‘The Boss Baby: Family Business’ Opens #2 In Theaters, Far Behind Original’s Opening
The Boss Baby: Family Business, Dreamworks’ sequel to its 2017 surprise hit, was released by Universal in North America on Friday, in time for the four-day weekend.
The film opened solidly, albeit far lower than the original, as expected. Here are the key numbers:
- Family Business opened with $17.3 million (estimated) over the Fri–Sun frame. It is expected to gross around $23M through Monday.
- It was the biggest-grossing new release of the weekend, and second only to holdover title F9: The Fast Saga, the latest in Universal’s Fast & Furious franchise.
- Family Business cost $82M to make.
- The first Boss Baby launched with a far bigger $50.1M in 2017, going on to take $175M domestically and $352.9M internationally, for a $527.9M global cume. But then many animated sequels have performed worse than the originals in recent years.
- Then there’s the Covid factor. Around a fifth of U.S. theaters are still closed, as are cinemas in Canada’s Ontario province, which accounts for 40% of that country’s box office.
- Finally, Family Business was simultaneously released on NBCUniversal’s young Peacock streamer, where upper-tier subscribers can watch it at no extra cost. Viewership figures haven’t been released.
- According to Comscore, the three days from July 2 to July 4 marked the third-best domestic weekend since Covid hit.
