JJ music video for Wand JJ music video for Wand

JJ is a dreamy and serene music video for the band Wand.

JJ, a red, hairy, armless creature, gallops along a barren landscape and shits out a blue creature, who then pukes out a green creature, and on it goes until there’s thousands of colorful creatures trekking along the landscape. JJ, meanwhile, is alone, adrift from the community he created.

There’s a welcoming serenity to both the song (which has echoes of The Doors in places) and the video that feels like one of those lazy summer afternoons where you just turn off the world and just be.

JJ can be interpreted in many ways. On one hand, it is a simple, effective, and gentle celebration of community and friendship, appreciating the moments of joy that pass as quickly as they arrive. It’s also maybe a reminder that isolation and solitude are okay too. There are some who crave community yet cannot function within it once they have it. The ultimate beauty of this hypnotic video is that you sit back and read it anyway you choose.

JJ was co-directed by lilfuchs, animator of many music videos and currently art director at Adult Swim, and writer/comedian Vernon Chatman, a writer/producer/actor on South Park and the co-creator of shows like Wonder Showzen, Xavier: Renegade Angel, and The Shivering Truth. Vernon plotted out & designed the colorful characters, with lilfuchs handling art and animation. Additional animation was done by Julia Fernandez.
