The Cartoon Brew Livestream: Patrick Smith And the Importance Of Making Your Own Work
Cartoon Brew’s new livestream show airs every Friday morning on our Youtube channel.
On today’s episode, we’ll hav American filmmaker and animator Patrick Smith, a veteran of the New York indie animation scene who has had tremendous success on Youtube over the last few years.
Recently, one of Smith’s tweets, embedded below, generated a lively and sometimes controversial discussion. As an artist, Smith has always straddled the line between the commercial and indie worlds. He was an animation director on Daria and Downtown, and later ran his own commercial studio, Blend Films, yet he has always remained committed to his work and has also animated over 30 independent shorts. We’ll talk about he balances these two aspects of his animation career, especially when finances are tight.
Hey animators that are unemployed: Make a film. And not a pilot, not a pitch, not a really slick animatic. Make a complete animated short film. Make it really good, make it really short, make it meaningful, and get it out there. Do it all on your own. You won't regret it.
