Weta FX Expands Into Australia With New Permanent Melbourne Hub
At least one visual effects company is growing amid industry contraction. New Zealand-headquartered Weta FX has announced a new Australia hub in Melbourne, Victoria.
The new satellite, with support from the Victoria government, is expected to create 80 jobs in Australia. “We’re investing in Weta FX because we see the direct benefits for the state in bolstering our growing screen industry, creating high-value jobs and boosting economic growth,” said Danny Pearson, Victoria’s minister for economic growth and jobs.
Weta first set up a visual effects facility in Melbourne for the production of Better Man, which was the largest movie to ever be filmed in Victoria. The success of that temporary installation led to Weta’s decision to establish a permanent base in Australia.
Weta FX Melbourne hub manager Sharna Hackett said in a statement, “The Victorian Government’s recognition of the economic and cultural benefits of a strong screen industry, and their commitment to supporting its growth and innovation, was critical to our decision to invest further in Victoria.”
Weta has key involvement in numerous vfx-driven franchises including Avatar, The Game of Thrones, Planet of the Apes, and The Lord of the Rings. The company opened a Vancouver satellite, its first studio outside of New Zealand, in 2022. It currently employs over 2,000 workers.
