Sun Creature, One Of Denmark’s Most Dynamic Studios, Opens French Unit
As it grows its slate, Sun Creature is expanding beyond its base in Copenhagen, Denmark by opening a new studio in France by late August.
Here are the details:
- Sun Creature France will open in Bordeaux, where it will benefit from the country’s generous tax rebates and public funds (incentives missing from Denmark’s animation scene). Up to 50 jobs will be created — roughly as many as in Copenhagen. The studio will be headed by Charlotte de la Gournerie, a producer and co-owner at Sun Creature.
- The French studio’s first project will be the second season of The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe (image at top) for Cartoon Network. The first season of the 2d comedy series — Denmark’s first for Cartoon Network — was critically acclaimed, winning four Emile Awards in 2018. The directors are Eva Lee Wallberg and Christian Bøving-Andersen.
- Sun Creature CEO Bo Juhl Nielsen said in a statement: “Three of the co-founders are French, and it always felt natural for us to have a physical presence in France. It’s been a dream to gain enough footing to reach that goal. It is a very exciting time ahead of us, that we share with the most talented and dedicated team.”
- The company was founded in 2013 by graduates of Denmark’s prestigious Animation Workshop, on the back of a crowdfunding campaign for the series The Reward: Tales of Alethrion.
- It recently completed its first feature, the animated migration documentary Flee, which was included in Cannes’s official selection of 56 films this year — one of four animated features to receive that honor.
- Meanwhile, Sun Creature is developing a new family series, Where It Falls, which is being pitched at Annecy’s MIFA market this week. The show follows a family’s quest to find their missing mother in a world where gravity has suddenly shifted by 90 degrees.
