Tokyo-based Polygon Pictures (PPI) is opening a new studio in India. Polygon Studios India Private Limited will be a wholly owned subsidiary specialized in rigging work.

Located in Thane, a satellite city of Mumbai, Polygon India will address what the company describes as a “shortage of staff” among rigging artists. The studio will hire Indian staff who used to work for Polygon in Japan or at its Malaysian joint venture Silver Ant-PPI.

PPI says that many of its major cg outsourcing partners are already based in India. As such, the creation of Polygon India will facilitate communication and production orders with these partners.

Sandeep Betharia will lead Polygon India as CEO. Betharia was previously a technical director at PPI, and he later helped establish Silver Ant-PPI, which opened its doors in 2013. He will sit on Polygon India’s board of directors alongside Shuzo Shiota, PPI’s president and CEO, and Jack Liang, PPI producer deptartment 1 vice president.

Founded in 1983, Polygon is one of Japan’s most prominent cg animation studios. It produced the animation for Disney Channel’s Emmy-nominated Star Wars Resistance, Apple TV+’s Stillwater, the Studio Ghibli co-production Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter, and Cartoon Network’s Transformers: Robots in Disguise. Other credits include Cartoon Network’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Disney Channel’s Big Hero 6: The Series, and the Ajin films and series.
