‘Puss In Boots’ Debut Tops U.K. Box Office As Dreamworks’ Latest Approaches $400M Globally
Universal/Dreamworks’ Puss in Boots: The Last Wish pulled off another strong weekend at the box office raking in an estimated $8 million domestically, good for fourth place.
Worldwide, The Last Wish also finished fourth adding $17.1 million from 80 international markets. The film has now reached $217.3 million internationally and $368.6 million worldwide, and it looks like a lock to cross the $400 million global box office milestone.
Although PiB has been in theaters in most of the world since Christmas, it only debuted in the U.K. this weekend, taking the top spot and pulling in $6.1 million from 1,500 screens.
The Last Wish‘s strong domestic weekend pushed the film to a total North American haul of $151.3 million, passing the first Puss in Boots film’s lifetime gross of $149.3 million.
Over the weekend, the only other animated feature playing wide at North American cinemas was Viva Pictures’ The Amazing Maurice. Debuting in 1,694 theaters, the film only managed to pull in $1.5 million in the territory. While The Last Wish similarly opened below expectations, that film managed to rebound thanks to strong word of mouth. Maurice, on the other hand, has failed to spark much joy among audiences, with only 43% of viewers saying they’d recommend the film according to Posttrak polling.
In China, popular franchise feature Boonie Bears: Guardian Code had another impressive weekend, pulling in $21.1 million. It finished the weekend in sixth place at the global box office, despite only being available in its home territory. The film’s total take so far sits at $185.3 million.
Fellow Chinese feature Deep Sea was the ninth highest-grossing film globally over the weekend, grossing $13.8 million. As with Boonie Bears, Deep Sea is still only available in Chinese cinemas. The film has grossed $97.6 million over its first three weeks in theaters.
An early version of this article based on Box Office Mojo estimates had The Amazing Maurice at $1 million over the weekend, but the figures have since been updated to reflect the film’s true final tally.
