‘One Piece Film Red’ Debuts In Second Place At North American Box Office With $9.48 Million Weekend
One Piece Film Red, Crunchyroll’s latest big IP box office release, earned $9.48 million over its first weekend in North American theaters, good for second place behind Black Adam.
One Piece was screened in 2,367 theaters across the U.S. and Canada over the weekend, averaging $4,003 per location. Once again, that was good for second-best after Black Adam.
One Piece’s solid opening weekend could be seen as a bit of a letdown, however, when compared to Crunchyroll’s other recent debuts. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 opened earlier this year with $18 million, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero in August with $21.1 million, and back in 2021 Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train opened with $21.2 million. Those films went on to gross $34.5 million (Jujutsu), $38.1 million (Super Hero), and $49.5 million (Demon Slayer) over their U.S. runs.
While $9.48 million may be a modest haul compared to those franchise behemoths, it represents a massive step forward for the One Piece IP in North America. In 2017, One Piece Film Gold opened with $50,241, grossing $423,593 over its theatrical run. Two years later, One Piece: Stampede opened with $357,740 on its way to a $1.29 million total.
Looking at the global picture, One Piece Film Red grossed $16 million worldwide over the weekend, bringing its total box office take to a stunning $171.9 million after a Japanese theatrical run that saw it become the year’s highest-grossing film and the ninth highest-grossing film of all time at 17.74 billion yen ($127 million).
Perhaps more impressively, One Piece Film Red is now the ninth-highest-grossing anime film of all time globally, passing Princess Mononoke’s total of $170 million.
