Indonesian Feature ‘Jumbo’ Shatters Local Animation Records (Updated)
Update, Apr. 13, 3:15pm PT: Indonesia is having a Ne Zha 2 moment of its own, albeit on a more modest scale. The country’s hit animated feature has now surpassed 3 million admissions after 14 days of release. The previous most-viewed homegrown Indonesian animated film (see original story below) had only 642,000 admissions. The success of Jumbo is indicative of the growing demand for non-Western animation in Southeast Asia that reflects local culture, traditions, and values.
Currently, according to this Wikipedia chart of the most-viewed Indonesian films, Jumbo is the 22nd most-popular title of all-time in the country. But it has the potential to go much higher. Per the chart below, the film had nearly 480K admissions today, its 14th day of release, which is the best day yet of its theatrical run. Wherever it ends up, the film is already a huge hit and heralds a new age for animation in the world’s fourth-most-populous country.

Original story:In just eight days of release, the new Indonesian animated feature Jumbo has smashed the country’s previous theatrical animation records and become the highest-grossing homegrown animated film ever released in Indonesia, which is the world’s fourth-most populous country behind India, China, and the United States.
The previous animation box office record, according to Variety, was held by Si Juki The Movie: Panitia Hari Akhir (2017) with around 642K admissions. Jumbo has more than doubled that in eight days; today, Jumbo surpassed 1.33 million admissions.
Ryan Adriandhy, who co-wrote and directed the film, has been celebrating the film’s success on social media, and posted a video of filmgoers on Sunday after the film achieved one million admissions:

The film’s producer Anggia Kharisma told Variety:
These numbers aren’t just about ticket sales. They represent love, hope, and trust from the people for our own local stories. Seeing this kind of heartfelt response from Indonesian audiences makes every challenge we’ve faced over the past five years feel incredibly meaningful.
Produced by Visinema Pictures, Jumbo has been sold in nearly a dozen-and-a-half other territories, with international rollout starting in June. Countries where it is currently scheduled to screen include Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Russia, Ukraine, and the Baltic states.
The film’s trailer can be viewed below. Per the official synopsis: “Don, a boy who gets bullied and nicknamed ‘Jumbo’ by his peers because of his chubby physique wants to get even with the bully, but a spirit named Meri suddenly appears and asks for Don’s help to reunite her with her family’s spirits being in trouble.”
