‘Incredibles 2’ Is Now The Highest-Grossing U.S. Animation Release Of All-Time
On Saturday, July 7th, the 23rd day of release of Disney-Pixar’s Incredibles 2, the Brad Bird-directed film accomplished something incredible by becoming the highest-grossing animation release of all-time in the United States.
Final Saturday numbers aren’t available yet, but the film scored an estimated $9.8 million yesterday, boosting its total to over $485 million. The current record holder, the 2016 Pixar film Finding Dory, has $486.2 million so Pixar’s latest easily took the crown today.
The weekend total for Incredibles 2 is projected to be over $30 million, meaning the film will also pass the $500 million mark by tomorrow, making it the first animated film to ever do so. It’s currently projected to wrap up its fourth weekend in second place, behind just Disney-Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Adjusted for inflation, the highest-grossing animated feature of the contemporary era that has been released theatrically only one time is Shrek 2 (2004), whose gross today would end up around $650.8 million. It’s unlikely that Incredibles 2 will match that figure, though the film still has plenty of room to grow beyond $500 million.
In terms of worldwide box office gross, Incredibles 2 still has some work to do. Its global take of $693.4m isn’t in the all-time top ten, but there’s time yet for the film to crack that list.
