Global Animation Domination Continues: ‘Grinch’ Tops $450M, ‘Ralph’ $350M, ‘Spider-Verse’ $200M
In the last weekend of the year, animation and vfx dominated the worldwide box office.
The top six films globally were all animated or live-action/vfx hybrid films. In order of box office earnings, those six films were Aquaman, Bumblebee, Mary Poppins Returns, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, The Grinch, and Ralph Breaks The Internet.
All three of the animated films achieved milestone figures this weekend: Universal-Illumination’s The Grinch hit $450 million, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Ralph Breaks the Internet reached $350 million, and Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse topped the $200 million mark.
Grinch’s $21.7 million weekend ($17.5m int’l/$4.2m domestic) gives the film a running tally of $469.4 million worldwide; Ralph picked up $20.2 million ($13.7m int’l/$6.5m domestic) for an overall of $350.4 million; and Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse came up with $45.7 million ($27.4m int’l/$18.3m domestic) for $213.2m total.
On the hybrid side: Warner Bros.’ Aquaman delivered $136.9m worldwide for the weekend lifting its global total to $748.7m; Paramount’s Bumblebee pulled in $66.2m for an overall of $156.7m; and Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns racked up $56.9m worldwide for a $173.3m total.
