‘DC League Of Super-Pets’ Tops Domestic Box Office Despite Underwhelming Opening Weekend
DC League of Super-Pets’ grossed an estimated $23 million domestically over its first weekend in theaters.
The film’s North American estimated gross was enough to overthrow Jordan Peele’s Nope for the top spot, although Super-Pets’ DC Comics’ roots and A-list voice cast had many believing it could do much better. Experts had predicted the film would pull in between $26-39 million, although the majority predicted something near the lower end of that range.
Although Super-Pets fell well short of Lightyear’s opening weekend haul, Warner’s latest holds a major long-term advantage over Disney’s latest flop in that there is little-to-no competition at the box office over the next five weeks, especially in the form of other kids and family fare. By the time Sony’s Lyle Lyle Crocodile opens on October 5, Super-Pets will be hitting the final stretch of its theatrical run.
Globally, Super-Pets scored another $18.4 million from 63 offshore markets. The film’s estimated opening weekend global box office finished at $41.4 million, which falls – much like the film’s critical response – squarely in the good-not-great category.
Meanwhile, Minions: The Rise of Gru continues to soldier on and pulled in another $25.4 million from 79 markets internationally. That was good for third place worldwide. The film has now grossed $710.4 million.
In its third week in theaters, Paramount’s Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank was dropped from 1,314 theaters nationwide and suffered a corresponding 80.6% drop in its box office, only pulling in $750,169. And, despite being available in 231 more theater’s than it was last weekend, A24’s Marcel the Shell with Shoes On saw its first week-on-week box office drop, making $602,300 from 821 theaters.
In its final weekend before hitting Disney+, Lightyear only managed to generate $239,000 in ticket sales. And, Still available in a handful of theaters, The Bad Guys grossed another $27,720 while The Bob’s Burgers Movie made a negligible $1,000 from just 15 locations.
