Fathom Event’s 15th anniversary re-release of Henry Selick and Laika’s stop-motion feature Coraline continued to achieve stunning box office numbers in its second weekend.

The estimated box office for the second weekend is $5 million, good for seventh place at the box office and a domestic total of $24.6 million. Considering that the film is screening in only 1,422 theaters, it earned $3,520 from each location, the fourth-highest per-theater average of any film in the top 10.

Meanwhile, Trafalgar Releasing is handling the international re-release, and with foreign box office added in, Coraline has grossed $38.2 million during its current run, with many markets, including France, still to come.

In the U.K., Coraline surpassed E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in the all-time top re-releases list, where it is now second only to last year’s Titanic re-release. Coraline has also outearned its original release gross box office in Mexico and is within striking distance of besting the 1.6 million total admits from 2009.

New American animation also continues to perform exceptionally well at the box office. Universal/Illumination’s Despicable Me 4, directed by Chris Renaud and co-directed by Patrick Delage, added another $4.4m domestically, lifting its total to $348.2m, making it the third-highest-grossing film released in the U.S. this year. It also added another $18.5m internationally to its running foreign total of $537.1m, for a global gross of $885.3m. On a global scale, it is also the third-highest-grossing release of the year.

Disney-Pixar’s Inside Out 2, directed by Kelsey Mann, picked up another $11.2m worldwide ($2.1m of that from its 11th weekend in the U.S.) and currently has a global gross of $1.64 billion. By next week, the film should surpass the $1.65 billion total of the 2019 Lion King cg remake to become the highest-grossing animated feature of all time.
