Winners have been announced for the 20th annual VES Awards, which recognize outstanding visual effects artistry and innovation in film, animation, television, commercials, and video games. The Visual Effects Society ceremony took place yesterday evening at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.

Warner Bros.’s Dune, which had the most nominations of any “photoreal” (i.e. live-action/hybrid) feature with six, won in four of its categories, including the key award for visual effects in a photoreal feature.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Encanto led the animation pack with six nominations, and also won four awards, including the top animation award for visual effects in an animated feature.

The only other winner in the animated feature categories was Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon which won for effects simulation in an animated feature. Both Disney-Pixar’s Luca and Sony Pictures Animation’s The Mitchells vs. the Machines were shut out at the awards.

The Apple TV+ series Foundation picked up two awards, including best photoreal episode for “The Emperor’s Peace.” On the commercial side, “Hope Reef” for Sheba topped the field with two wins.

Disney’s Marvel content had a total of 21 nominations, but went home with just one win: Loki for compositing and lighting in an episode.

Besides the awards below, the VES Lifetime Achievement award was presented to EVP/general manager of Lucasfilm Lynwen Brennan and the VES Award for Creative Excellence went to Guillermo del Toro.
