The Television Academy Unveils This Year’s Juried Emmy Winners
The Television Academy has revealed the winners of this year’s juried Emmy Awards from several categories, including motion design and individual achievement in animation.
Last year, Netflix productions dominated the juried animation awards, taking five of the six prizes given out by the organization. This year, the field is smaller but more diverse. The jury recognized four artists, none from the same studio.
Netflix didn’t go away empty-handed, though. Entergalactic lead character designer Meybis Ruiz Cruz was recognized for her work on the musical special, created by Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi and directed by Fletcher Moules.
The Simpsons added to its extensive Emmy trophy collection when character layout artist Nik Ranieri was recognized for his work on the episode “Lisa the Boy Scout.” Ranieri is now a two-time recipient of the honor, having won an individual achievement juried Emmy award in 2021 for The Simpsons episode “Wad Goals.”
Animation director Maya Edelman was singled out for her color work on Paramount+’s More than I Want to Remember, a short film that had an incredible festival run, including stops at Annecy, SXSW, Tribeca, and many others. This is Edelman’s second juried Emmy win. In 2018, she was part of the motion design team that received a juried Emmy for their work on Broad City.
The Emmy jury singled out Almu Redondo for her work as animation director on the Star Wars: Visions episode “Screecher’s Reach,” produced by Cartoon Saloon and directed by studio co-founder Paul Young.
This year’s jury also recognized the motion design team behind Disney+’s Marvel series Ms. Marvel, directed by Ian Spendloff.
Juried category hopefuls are screened by a panel of professionals in the appropriate peer groups with the possibility of one, more than one, or no entry awarded an Emmy. As a result, there are no nominees. Instead, there is a one-step evaluation and voting procedure.
This year’s juried Emmy awards will be presented at the 75th Creative Arts Emmys, which will take place at the Peacock Theater on Saturday, January 6, and Sunday, January 7, 2024. An edited presentation will air on Saturday, January. 13, on FXX.
